Working on Paul Gilbert sixes

I’ve been working on Paul Gilbert’s sixes. I’m looking for tips?

Are you running into a particular issue? There are a lot of potential pitfalls here if you’re new to it.

I just started working with it. I just found out that I have a DSX picking style and I’m looking for tips for getting speed or really anything that can help. I’m new to all this Troy Grady stuff. I find it fantastic. I was steered in the direction of MR.DSX and was told to work with the Paul Gilbert sixes.

Gotcha. Usually step one around here is making sure you have good hand sync on a single string exercise first, like the Yngwie pattern. If you are already decent with that type of thing, then I’d say to memorize a 3-note-per-string scale pattern - major is easy since the shape contains three pairs of identical fingerings. For example, A major would be frets 5 7 9 on low E and A, 6 7 9 on D and G, 7 9 10 on B and high E.

Once you have that totally memorized with the left hand, just try picking through the “Gilbert sixes” - E string notes then A, A string notes again then D, D string again then G, etc…

A lot of times people struggle a bit with DSX on the low E at first - if you find that’s the case for you, just start on the D string and play the pattern from there for the time being.

Outside of that, I’d need to see video to offer further advice. Good luck!
