Yngwie Pick Grip

Hi all - long time lurker, first time poster, recent MIM subscriber here, although I have bought most of the downloads available since way back in 2014. @Troy - absolutely outstanding work, which has revolutionised my conception of both playing and teaching guitar.

Does anyone have any thoughts on YJM’s actual grip? Is it pad-angle with extended fingers as per Troy’s terminology? Although I’m not a huge fan of his music per se, I am in awe of his efficient picking technique and am working on replicating it, at least as an experiment. He does seem to have an extended-index “pincer grip” at times, but the index seems to curl back and the thumb bends slightly when he moves to the lower strings, for instance on the infamous volcano lick. I know Troy is rethinking some of his initial concepts on YJM’s rotational motion, but wondered if any of you had thoughts on replicating that super-relaxed pick grip and motion that our favourite beefy Swede displays…?

Hey DrNic!
I found this Yngwie lesson really helpful, they have some great shots of his picking hand.
Good luck!

Thanks Bob! I have seen that video (more times than I’d care to admit…!) There are indeed some excellent shots of the picking hand but I’m wondering if I’m interpreting the grip correctly as a pad-angle-extended finger kind of deal…
