Hey!
I was just watching re-stream of Yngwie’s Masterclass and one thing that really surprised me was him talking about his string action. He said it’s about 8mm on low E and around 6-7mm on high E string. For me it sounds insane. Is so high action used in shredding really? I’m used to 1-2mm above. I know Yngwie can not be specific about it…but maybe it’s commonly used?
I wonder if he meant 8mm from the fretboard rather than the top of a fret, which would make sense with his preference for scalloped fretboards. I’m not even aware of a common bridge you can raise to set a string 8mm above the 12th fret. Even 8mm above a scalloped fretboard would still result in a pretty generous action, even if it makes more sense to me that way.
Oh yes. 8mm from scalloped fretboard may make sense in this situation. It will still be high but sounds at least a little more possible that way. Thanks
It is very high and 8 mm would not be a surprise.
It is not easy to lift the strings so much and still get intonation correctly set up.
Pretty sure this is because he uses 8 gauge strings tuned to Eb.
Years ago I set up a guitar like that, and honestly high action was the only way to make it playable.
My technique is far from Yngwie, but I played someone’s scalloped neck and couldn’t tell any difference. Then I realised that fretting fingers don’t actually touch the wood, just the strings. Just a thought.
I’ve got one strat with scalloped neck and for me it is almost the same but slightly harder to do However bending and vibrato are magic
This is the answer to “Why scalloped?”
… that and a nice side effect, depending which way you look at it, is that you can “grab em by the balls”, as Yngwie would say
