Hello there. I never really focused on technique much at all in the past, and as a result I’m far from being able to play fast as you can see in the videos below. Before I commit to the metronome to improve in this regard I want to make sure my foundational technique is half decent, so any criticism/ advice would be much appreciated.
I try to use 2-way pick slanting for the most part, and from what I can tell my picking motion comes almost exclusively from the wrist.
For context here’s my tremolo picking at 175bpm, which is not far from my limit as you can tell by the sloppy timing.
Here’s me playing a 3NPS major scale ascending and descending, more or less as fast as I can, and also playing the Paul Gilbert lick as fast as I can. Both are slow as you can see and on the 3NPS major scale I gas out very quickly and as a result I can’t play it much faster than is shown in the video without running out of energy halfway through and not being able to finish without slowing down considerably.
And finally here’s a simple exercise descending then ascending. It’s interesting to note that on the way down it’s far more tiring on my right hand and less smooth than the ascending part, which is noticeably easier. I noticed that the descending part happens to be outside picking and the ascending part is inside picking if that has anything to do with it.
