Changing old technique

I really trust the Troy Grady/Cracking the Code method, so I’ve decided to fully commit to DSX and stop trying to fight against my natural picking motion.

My picking is getting smoother on a single string, but now I’m running into a problem when changing strings. The string changes feel like a separate event rather than one continuous motion, so I lose the smoothness I have on a single string.

I’m currently working on simple repetitive patterns with an even number of notes per string and DSX, but I’m wondering what the best way is to train smooth string changes. Should I spend more time developing synchronization on one string first, or is it better to start incorporating simple string-change patterns now?

If you have a fast, easy motion, with good pick attack, strong accents, accurate upstroke chunking, and hand sync on one string then changing strings is just adding tracking to the mix. Film will confirm if you have everything ready on a single string and are ready string change tracking.

CTC preaches tackling one problem at a time. You got this

Thanks, that makes sense. I think I understand the idea of tackling one problem at a time.

I’m still trying to understand the “tracking” part, though. What exactly should I be focusing on when I start adding string changes? Is it mainly learning to move the picking hand to the next string while keeping the same picking motion, rather than consciously making a separate movement for the string change?

I want to make sure I’m practicing the right thing rather than accidentally treating the string change as a separate picking motion.

you will want motion to stay the same. Troy talks about it a bit here-different motion but idea still stands-keep motion the same:

WIth DSX, you will want to change strings after downstroke. With even notes per string that means upstroke chunking= starting on upstroke

For dsx motion it looks like whole arm is moving along.
