Gabrielthorn progress thread

Great video what a killer guitarist he was and a decent singer.

I’ve been working on that SOTN run and I’m getting close so feeling quite good about myself today. I don’t think I could get close to the proper speed though. I transcribed 68 notes over 2 bars 69 including the final A on 17th fret of E.
I’ve also got a feeling that he doesn’t pick every note. He may be aiming to but doesn’t quite.

This has also highlighted my poor picking on the lower E and A strings. It’s easier on my LP as I can anchor my palm slightly but on the Strat I find it hard to anchor so have to start that run floating picking hand which is harder, doable but harder.

I’ll try and do a video when I’ve got it a bit more consistent I’ll try it again tomorrow.

Still Of The Night:

  • BPM ~93 (from my calculations, tabs say faster but 93 is about what the record is).
  • 4/4 signature = 2.58 seconds per bar, plus there’s 2 or 3 2/2 bars.
  • run = 2 × 4/4 bars.
  • 2 bars = 2.58 × 2 = 5.16 seconds.
  • number of notes in run ~68.
  • number of notes per second ~13.2.
  • equivalent of 16ths at ~198.

That’s some fast playing if you can get there, I don’t think I ever will but hey it’s fun to try.

The recording is 99 bpm so you are right, the run is at the equivalent speed of playing 16th at 198 bpm, yesterday I got there, but it needs time to get consistent and be able to pull this off anytime.

As Troy said, 220 is the new 180.

Cool but the metronome is a bit loud.

It sounds loud, because I’m using the metronome app in the phone

Sounds like someone in the background smashong the crap out of a wood block!

Close! To me - and I’m aware we all hear things differently - it sounds like it’s actually Gabe’s friend trying to repeatedly get a ball in a cup:

On the forum we’ve had many cases where metronome ticks and ball-in-cup sounds are confused with one another. As it turns out, even elite metronome users don’t always know that it’s a ball-in-cup in the background!

As always, if Gabe has Magnet footage I’d be more than happy to take a look! Let us know how you all make out!

Haha, secret has been revealed. I also sleep listening to ball-in-a-cup sounds.

I’ve backed the magnet on Kickstarter, but we need to wait for the new Kickstarter project called Swipe-guard I’m afraid, so I can record myself without damaging others vision

I’m glad I’m not the only one that just heard an aggressive metronome, lol. From what I could tell though it sounded good!

Did you order one? I did! It would be ironic if everyone ordered, complained that it’s late, but never actually uploaded footage once they had it. I’ll be more motivated to play and post videos when it’s here!

Yeah I ordered one as soon as the pre-orders came out.

Can’t wait to see how much more inaccurate and fucked up my picking is than I have previously thought it to be :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Same expectations here, I can’t wait to see how fucked up my picking hand is. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: Facing the truth is inevitable.

I actually won’t mind as long as it helps me find more consistency. I could also get consistency by playing more frequently, but that’s too easy.

Haha me too, I’ve known for a while I really need to post some video of my picking motions to get some advice but I know the experts on here will tear me apart and I’ll get so depressed I’ll burn my guitar for firewood.

This is also why I’m constantly trying to reinforce the ideology that it’s more important to be unique, than copying or learning a technique that is being used by everyone else.
My technique is very sloppy, my middle name is ‘Slurry’, but hey, it’s unique !

You’re the guy with the custom shop LP ? How did that work out for you ?

The guitar is glued to my body and I’m sleeping with her instead of my real girl.

Anyone else having any recommendations how to practice fretting hand position changes like the run at the end of this solo? I’m having a hard time above 190-200+ bpm 16th notes/130bpm+ sextuplets where the beat falls on a position shit after a group of notes.

One of my first sloppy attempts with this solo I started learning today, not even on the original tempo.

Might help if you just video the run in question but at a slower speed, also with light lol. What do you feel is messing you up? Landing on the right note during the shift?

Will record all those things tomorrow sir  And yes, landing on the correct note after the shift is messing me up.

Assuming that we’re talking about the same thing, I just practice position shifting between two “shapes” / patterns, normally the ones that mess with me the most. I try to refret though to avoid position shifts if I can.
