Hey everyone,
I finally borrowed a decent phone to film myself playing and allow CtC’s community of experts to analyze my technique!
So without further due, here are some videos of my different picking techniques and a little description of my struggles with each one of them.
Picking:
This video has three parts:
- one string DWPS (or what seems to me like DWPS): I can do this comfortably but I can’t get any faster without the pick starting to get “stuck”
- one string UWPS: this is where I am comfortable the most and can achieve a controlled faster picking.
- one string faster UWPS: not sure if this is really faster than the second type (I wouldn’t call it hyper picking because I am nowhere near that territory). But here I have a more tense arm and I can’t sustain it for a long time. Doing this kind of picking over multiple strings will also sound messy. Not to mention that my left hand probably won’t keep up as well.
2WPS
This is my attempt at descending sixes or what we call here The Pepsi Lick.
My own observations:
- I can get the synchronization going if I keep focusing on that first note of the six notes chunk. So the right hand 2WPS is more or less working for me now.
My issues:
- I feel that the stretches, even though not that big, are slowing me down. You will notice that I can play faster and more accurate above the 12th fret. In general I have a problem with the stretches, even above the 8th fret. They just slow me down. Feedback here is very much appreciated.
I didn’t try to make a clean take but that probably wouldn’t happen anyway. So here are two of my attempts:
UWPS:
This is my attempt at UWPS (Dorian position). I feel that I am quickly loosing synchronization even though I trying to focus on the chunking. Not sure if this is my left hand can’t keep up or because there is still something wrong with my picking.
DWPS:
Here is where I struggle the most. There are days where DWPS sort of works for me, and others where it doesn’t seem to work at all, like today:
In general, I am working on both UWPS, 2WPs and DWPS. Not sure if this is considered good or considered lack of focus.
I think I am making better progress with UWPS. But at the same time, I like to play a lot of pentatonic licks and I’d like to get better at DWPS.
I am looking forward to your feedback, not only concerning the playing but also concerning the setup, the lighting the sound etc. The latter will be helpful for future videos!
Thanks everyone in advance for your feedback!
Cheers \m/
