The Yngwie Malmsteen Strat

Oh I think your right. The 217 is the SH4!

Check the first review. Sounds legit.

Yes, the HS-4 was once a Malmsteen signature model. I didn’t know it was preferred as a neck pickup over the hs3. Seems that if you go far back enough, he had the 3s in all positions. Should be interesting if you try both.

I have a Squier Strat with DiMarzio HS3/HS4/HS4 pickup config. The HS4 seems a bit brighter than the HS3 so it bridges the gap between bridge and neck pickup.

I got a cheap solution to my issues for now

That guy’s tone and playing… He’s using a Helix for most stuff you hear on his profile, great player, I’m definitely a fan!

Yeah Bill, he’s a fantastic musician. Yeah he’s using the DOD 250 emulation on the helix!

I have the Helix Native (plugin) on my PC, I should probably give it another shot.

Theoretically it should sound exactly like the hardware unit?

I just installed locking tuners on the YJM.
They look great and the work really well.
Hard time finding these, but well worth it.
Changing strings now much faster and tuning stability +1

Looking hip bro
love open tuners; had waverleys on my lentz

Hey guys, how many springs you guys running on your YJMs?
I just noticed something. Had 5 raw vintage on mine, swapped them out for the original 3!
Feels more slinkey and I may be imagining it but; I think there’s some more upper mids happening!
Too much black art to this stuff. I like the 5 RW from my country days but the 3 regular is better for YJMiszms I think.

My apologies if I made anybody get the RW springs, things changes I guess, live and learn. Nothing is certain. The less I deviate from maestro’s gear the better it seems! I still think the RV saddles woke tthe guitar up a little more, but now I’m not sure it’s a good or bad thing since I got a real plexi and cab setup! Too manythings to try… hmmm.

That’s odd - the “more slinky” feeling makes sense and that’s generally been my experience too (and this could be placebo, but I’d say more so an arrow like /|\ than ||| paralllel) but the more upper mids seems unexpected.

NCASO - nice! looks great!

Absolutely befuddled, did if for a change of feel, was feeling stiff, but the tone thing, I dunno some mass thing maybe.

And I just swapped out all the saddles, the tone is much sweeter now! A/B’d it with recordings using the same string, surprisingly easy to reattach strings with slotted pegs!

When I put the RV saddles on this guitar I was using sub optimal gear and it sounded better to my ears then. In hindsight with the right gear, a plexi into T75s I don’t need that extra kick, the DOD YJM 308 and amp more than take care of that.

I guess I’m just balancing the scales out with the current rig. Also realized if you aren’t playing the right amp and setup, what ever I though of before was irrelevant to this setup.

I bought the raw vintage springs.
I went from 5 down to 3.
Set the guitar up to pull sharp, minor third
Tremelo floating,

I think the guitar sounds very good.
It is a bit too "slinky " though
I definitely need more tension on this guitar.

Should I go to 5 raw springs, or just abandon them altogether for a higher tension spring set.

I really have to have more tension here

Try 4, should be the sweet spot.

I had a hunch just to see why Yngwie is so specific about his spring setup. I like his way better. I could tell the diff with the plexi, but only because I just swapped it out, normally I doubt i’d be able to tell. These things are a bit spooky that way, sometimes it’s all in our heads. I go with my gut feeling on these things.

You should try both; always don’t be afraid to experiment; this is the reason I say learn to screw up and do your own setups; first day on the job as a programmer I was told if I’m not breaking anything I’m not fixing anything. Cause if you futz with the springs you are going to reset the claw etc. and going to a tech each time is just silly. You cant break anything, short of over tightening your truss rod, which itself is very hard to do, needs a lot of bloody minded determination, can’t happen by accident.

Go for it bro!

Yeah yeah, I’m going do it myself, get off my back!, I just go to the tech for electronics and when get I deep waters.

You’ve got the wrong impression of me.
